Los Angeles DirectAdmin Server Upgrade and Migration
05/17/2009 08:50
We are excited to report that our Los Angeles DirectAdmin server is undergoing a major upgrade and will be moving down the street to Telecom Center (http://www.carrierhotels.com/properties/telecomcenterla/index.shtml).
The new server will be a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 4x2.83GHz with 8GB of RAM!
We are planning to make this migration next Friday, May 22 at 5pm PT (GMT-8). We will start by backing up all accounts on the server and then restoring them to the new server. We are expecting no down time during this transition.
If you are currently using powerMonster name servers, then you will have to make no changes and everything will migrate over.
If you are using private name servers, then you will have to change the IPs registered to those name servers. We will provide you with the IP addresses prior to the start of the migration.
If you have dynamic sites (mainly blogs or forums or any site that depends upon an active database), it is highly recommended that you put it in maintenance mode, turn off commenting, and/or disallow database updates. This is not mandatory, but doing so will reduce the chance of data loss duirng DNS propagation. If you are going to do this, I would do this shortly before 5P PT.
***IMPORTANT INFO***
We are making some important changes to the config of this new server. We are going to be running under suPHP instead of traditional Apache PHP. By making this change, we will be able to better control the security of the server and determine which scripts are causing any slowdowns more quickly.
What does this mean to you?
Under suPHP, you may not turn on global permissions (no 777 or 666). Prior to migrating over, we will change the permissions automatically on all files and folders to 755 or 644 respectively. This is to protect outsiders from accessing your files/folders and making changes and executing scripts.
Also, under suPHP, you may not have any php flags in your htaccess files. Doing a cursory check, we have found that many of you have php flags in your htaccess files. YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE THESE PRIOR TO MIGRATION or you will receive a 500 error when accessing your site.
In place of the PHP flags, you will all have an individual php.ini file where you can implement your php changes that you previously added to your htaccess file, so all is not lost.
But again, you need to make these changes PRIOR to the migration to keep you sites up and working.
We believe that this migration will be a good move for you, our client, and powerMonster.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know!
Thanks!

***UPDATE*** Tuesday 19May09
We are happy to say that the Los Angeles DirectAdmin server is on schedue to be upgraded and moved as of 5pm PT (GMT-8) on Friday, May 22.
powerMonster.net is currently running on the new server.
The new server IP is 67.220.212.50 if you want to run some traceroutes on it. Also you can download the test file at http://67.220.212.50/test.bin.
If you are currently using powerMonster name servers, the name servers ns1-ns4.powerMonster.net will be redirected to the following IP addresses after the backup and restore of the sites from the old LA server:
67.220.212.51
67.220.212.52
67.220.212.53
67.220.212.54
If you are using one of those name servers listed above, you won't need to do anything to expedite the migration of your site to the new server. Everything will be handled for you.
If you are a reseller, you will need to point your private name servers to the following IP addresses respectively:
67.220.212.55
67.220.212.56
Failure to do so will make your sites unavailable after the move.
If you have purchased dedicated IP addresses, we will assign those IP addresses and release them to you in a future email.
Also, we are very EXCITED to mention that the new server is currently running on LiteSpeed instead of Apache (http://litespeedtech.com). We're hoping to see many benefits of running on this new platform. This is a beta test for us to see if the benefits outweight the cost of using this web server.
Because LiteSpeed has it's own security measures built in, suPHP will not work on LiteSpeed. So, as of right now, you can still keep your php flags in your .htaccess files for any php modifications. If we need to migrate back to Apache, we will be running under suPHP with individual php.ini files.
We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to migrate their site to the new server ahead of schedule to test out the LiteSpeed server prior to the official launch of the new server. If you are interested, please submit a site-migration ticket. We will be processing these voluntary early migrations between 9a-5p PT (GMT-8) daily until the official launch.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know. We hope you're as excited as we are to launch this new and powerful server powered by LiteSpeed.
